WOOLLASTON WOOLLASTON RIESLING 2007

Woollaston Riesling 2007

Aromas of sweet citrus blossom and lime on the nose are followed by lime and mandarin flavours in the mouth. A juicy acidity and fine minerality combine with a touch of sweetness to give the wine balance and poise.

Technical Information

WINEMAKING NOTES
Hand harvested grapes were gently whole bunch pressed. After cold settling the juice was racked and inoculated for fermentation. Temperatures were kept low, during fermentation to preserve the fruit flavours and aroma. Fermentation was stopped before dryness in order to retain a subtle natural residual sweetness that balances the acidity and structure of the wine. The finished wine was bottled via gravity.

PH 3.32
RS 8.5 G/L
TA 5.9 G/L
ALC 13.6 %

VITICULTURE
Pruned to 2 cane vertical shoot positioned (VSP). The vines had a light leaf pluck and trim to ensure the canopy was kept open and light. Bunch thinning, at fruit set, was carried out to balance the crop weight to the vines capacity to ripen fruit. The fruit was hand harvested.

Awards & Reviews

International Wine Challenge - Gold Medal. Judge's comments: Lemon-green colour. Lime and grapefruit nose, with mouthwatering acidity and layers of complexity on the palate. Long and complex finish.

Winestate, May/June issue 2009

Perfumed, ripely scented, spicy bouquet. Powerful wine, with concentrated, citrusy, spicy flavours and a hint of marmalade in a musky, slightly swee, full-bodied style. 4 stars.

Bob Campbell, The Taste Magazine

Good concentration in this medium/dry style with lovely ripe acidity. Classy Riesling with citrus and tree fruit flavours. The wine has a great texture, good purity and impressive length. 89 points.

Michael Cooper, The Listener, 2 Feb 2008

Deliciously ripe, full-bodied style with loads of citrusy, slightly pineappley flavour, fresh and well-rounded. A drink-young charmer, priced right. 4 Stars.

John Hawkesby, Next Magazine, Aug 2008

With aromas of sweet citrus blossom and lime, on the palate this wine imparts mandarin and lime with juicy acidity and a touch of sweetness.

Otago Daily Times, Charmian Smith, 19 March 2008

Wine of The Week – An intense, powerful wine, oozing rich fruit suggesting mandarin and other citrus, ripe peaches and flowers, all tightly held in balance by a bright, crisp dry finish, that leaves a lingering hint of marmalade in the aftertaste. 3.5/5

Floral on the nose, Woollaston Nelson Riesling 07 is off-dry, quite full-bodied, with lime and guava aromas and flavours, and fresh but soft balancing acidity.

Wine NZ, Martin Gillion, Autumn 2008

Editor’s Choice. Nelson has an established reputation for its Rieslings with many of them showing a distinctive and attractive minearlity as well as fresh forward fruitiness. This one from Woollaston’s Moutere winery is a good example.
It is quite floral on first approach. It has just a touch of residual sugar to balance some juicy acidity that is Riesling’s hallmark and has flavours of lime and sweet citrus. It is nicely balanced and should last quite well although it is lovely now. A really good example of a variety that deserves more recognition than it generally gets.
It would suit a range of food styles but ours was served, only slightly chilled, as an aperitif with a range of nibbles before a relaxed summer lunch. The start to a good afternoon.

Truewines, Keith Stewart, Feb 2008

Sleek nose has a glossy manner and a rich fruit note. Firm impact has mineral and fruit flavours with a strong acid tang. Mid palate is big and firm, with deep fruit flavours, a hint of nuts and a muscular feel. Finish is stern, deep and slightly brawny, completing a positive, characterful wine that feels and tastes strong. Rating 7/10
